White Sox errors lead to Rockies' win
Jun 15, 2008 - 4:28 AM By Gene Chamberlain PA SportsTicker Contributing Writer*CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Starter Jorge De La Rosa and three relievers combined to limit the Chicago White Sox to three singles Saturday as the Colorado Rockies recorded a 2-0 interleague victory.
Both Colorado runs were scored courtesy of errors by Chicago, which saw its nine-game home winning streak come to an end.
White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko booted Willy Taveras' two-out grounder to let Jeff Baker score from third with the game's first run in the seventh inning. The miscue came on a ball hit hard off reliever Octavio Dotel (3-4). Baker had doubled to left, then moved up on Yorvit Torrealba's sacrifice bunt.
Torrealba added an insurance run in the ninth inning on reliever Nick Masset's overthrow of first after fielding a one-out grounder hit by Taveras.
The runs netted a victory for reliever Jason Grilli (2-0), who threw 1 2/3 innings after De La Rosa was pulled.
Brian Fuentes worked around a leadoff single by A.J. Pierzynski in the ninth to record his 10th save of the season.
"Our offense was real quiet today," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "We have to give them credit.
"De La Rosa threw a lot of breaking balls and he was really good because we kept chasing them. We just couldn't pull the trigger at the right time."
De La Rosa, who came into the game with an 8.13 earned run average, allowed only Brian Anderson's single up the middle with one out in the third inning.
"I think we got more than we could have expected," said Rockies manager Clint Hurdle, who said prior to the game that De La Rosa might get only five innings.
"First and foremost, it was a great outing. You saw fastball command, you saw some first-pitch curveball, you saw good sliders and changeups late in the count for strikeouts. Just a big-time outing."
He hit a batter and walked one while striking out a career-high eight.
"All my pitches were very good today, I felt I had good command," De La Rosa said.
Hurdle said it's too soon to say whether De La Rosa will be a full-time starter again.
Taveras stole five bases in the game, but the Rockies wasted numerous chances.
"I always have the green light on the base paths so I just picked the right spot to run," Taveras said.
The visitors went 0-for-15 with runners in scoring position and left a runner at third base six times.
"We've dealt with that most of the season, so we won a ballgame tonight, 2-0, and we'll probably just move past that one," said Hurdle of his team's struggles to drive in runs.
Colorado had put runners in scoring position in five of starter John Danks' six innings without plating a run.
Danks surrendered five hits, walked one and struck out six before departing after 105 pitches.
