Scorching hot DeJesus, Royals aim to sweep Cardinals
Jun 19, 2008 - 1:16 PM Kansas City (30-42) at St. Louis (42-31) 2:15 pm. EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- The Kansas City Royals look to ride the hot bat of David DeJesus to a three-game series sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday.
DeJesus hit a game-tying home run in the eighth inning and Alex Gordon belted a go-ahead shot later in the frame as the Royals rallied for a 3-2 victory on Wednesday. It was the first late-inning comeback for the Royals, who had been 0-37 when trailing after seven innings.
Kansas City has won four straight, thanks in large part to DeJesus. The sixth-year center fielder is hitting .471 (8-for-17) with three home runs eight RBI during the winning streak.
DeJesus and the Royals will try to match their longest winning streak of the season against spot-starter Brad Thompson, who will be activated from the disabled list prior to this game. The righthander has been sidelined since April 23 with right elbow inflammation.
Thompson (1-1, 4.58 ERA) is the Cardinals third option after both Todd Wellemeyer and Anthony Reyes were unable to go. Wellemeyer has inflammation in his right elbow, and Reyes was placed in the disabled list with a right elbow strain on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Royals counter with Zack Grienke (5-4, 3.48), who is 0-3 with a 6.10 ERA in his last five starts.
