Baker hopes to lead Twins over Tigers
Jul 12, 2008 - 10:08 AM Minnesota (52-41) at Detroit (46-46), 3:55 pm EDTDETROIT (Ticker) -- Young, talented pitching has been a surplus for the Minnesota Twins this season.
They hope that trend continues as Scott Baker takes the mound in the third-game of four against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.
Baker (5-2, 3.32 ERA) is one of four starters in the Twins' rotation under the age of 27 and has been a stalwart for a unit still without injured Francisco Liriano.
The 26-year-old righthander is coming off a brilliant outing against the Boston Red Sox in which he tossed seven shutout innings and hopes to build on solid pitching that starter Glen Perkins gave the Twins on Friday.
Perkins threw 6 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on his way to a 3-2 victory, marking the second time he's beaten the Tigers in three starts.
Nate Robertson (6-7, 5.19) will take the mound for Detroit after throwing a complete-game four-hitter against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.
Detroit , which is 4-9 against Minnesota this season, managed only three runners into scoring position before the seventh on Friday. The loss dropped the club back to the .500 mark.
Meanwhile, the Twins have won 18 of their last 23.
