After rare blown save, Wilson aims to bounce back
Aug 21, 2008 - 10:18 AM Florida (65-62) at San Francisco (54-72) 3:45 p.m. EDTSAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- It isn't often Brian Wilson blows a save, but luckily the San Francisco Giants know how to pull out a victory.
The Giants go for their sixth win in seven games on Thursday when they face the Florida Marlins.
Wilson, who is tied for third in the majors with 33 saves, had converted 24 consecutive opportunities -- dating to May 2 -- before surrendering a game-tying, three-run blast to rookie John Baker in the ninth inning on Wednesday.
However, Wilson managed to earn the victory as Bengie Molina lifted San Francisco to a 6-5 win with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame.
The win was Wilson's first of the year and he hopes to get a chance to bounce back when rookie Matt Palmer (0-1, 23.14 ERA) takes the mound for San Francisco.
Palmer, who was recalled from the minors last Thursday, did not pitch well in his first start in the majors. The 29-year-old righthander allowed six runs and seven hits in 2 1/3 innings, walking four en route to an 11-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday.
Josh Johnson (3-0, 3.38) goes for the Marlins, who trail the first-place New York Mets (70-57) by a season-high five games in the National League East.
Johnson had won each of his previous three starts before taking a no-decision in his last outing. The Florida righthander, who missed the first three months of the season while recovering from right elbow surgery, gave up three runs, five hits and three walks but struck out eight in six innings during Friday's 6-5 loss to the Chicago Cubs.
