Final/11
Marlins, Cardinals trying to keep playoff hopes alive
Sep 5, 2008 - 10:23 AM Florida (71-69) at St. Louis (75-65) 8:15 p.m. EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- The Florida Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals have been surprisingly competitive. However, both are beginning to struggle and will be trying to keep their playoff hopes alive when they meet on Friday.
Despite trading slugger Miguel Cabrera and lefthander Dontrelle Willis to the Detroit Tigers during the offseason, the Marlins were in the National League East race as late as August.
But, Florida has gone 21-24 since the All-Star Game and 13-18 since its last consecutive wins on July 30-31, falling eight games behind the first-place New York Mets (79-61) in the NL East and nine games behind the Milwaukee Brewers (80-60) for the wild card.
The Cardinals have also tumbled, posting a .500 record in the second half. They have dropped 10 games behind the Chicago Cubs (85-55) in the NL Central after completing a 1-5 road trip that included series against the Arizona Diamondbacks and Houston Astros.
Braden Looper (12-11, 4.27 ERA) tries to get St. Louis back on track. Looper is 2-0 with a 2.33 ERA in three career starts against the Marlins.
Ricky Nolasco (13-7, 3.65) counters for Florida, which owns a 15-5 record in the 25-year-old righthander's last 20 starts.
