Bynum leads late surge, Pistons edge Suns

Jan 23, 2011 - 4:52 AM Auburn Hills, MI (Sports Network) - Will Bynum scored all of his 12 points in the fourth quarter, and the Detroit Pistons rallied for a 75-74 win over the Phoenix Suns to snap a two-game losing streak.

The Pistons stormed back from a 15-point deficit in the final nine minutes, taking the lead for good at 71-70 on Austin Daye's jumper with 53.7 seconds left.

Tayshaun Prince led Detroit with 17 points and 13 rebounds -- his biggest board coming with nine seconds remaining after Bynum missed the second of two free throws.

Ben Wallace tipped the ball to Prince, who was fouled and converted the free throw for a 73-70 Detroit lead. The Pistons committed two stupid fouls and Steve Nash made a free throw to cut Phoenix's deficit to two points.

But Channing Frye missed a three-pointer for the Suns and Bynum grabbed the rebound, hitting two foul shots at the other end to seal the victory.

"You got to ride people that are playing well. Tonight was a perfect example where Will Bynum was doing a phenomenal job," said Piston head coach John Kuester.

Frye hit a meaningless three-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin -- but he and the rest of the starters did little as the Suns saw their season-best winning streak stopped at five games.

Nash had 14 points with eight assists, but was the only Phoenix starter to score in double digits. Vince Carter added nine points, while Frye and Grant Hill contributed eight apiece. Frye was a dreadful 2-for-12 from three-point range.

Some production came from the bench, with Jared Dudley adding 13 points and Marcin Gortat scoring 11 with 13 rebounds.

Despite the struggles of its starters, Phoenix hadn't trailed since the 9:19 mark of the second quarter before Daye, clearing Dudley out of the way with a pump fake, hit his shot from near the left elbow for the go-ahead basket.

Daye and Rodney Stuckey both scored 11 points for the Pistons, who outshot the Suns 47-26 percent in the fourth quarter while outscoring them 28-13.

"We have to finish games, that's the bottom line," said Suns head coach Alvin Gentry. "We have to play for 48 minutes. Even though it may be the oldest cliche in the book, you can see what happens when you don't."

Detroit controlled the first quarter, taking a 21-17 lead after 12 minutes, but the Suns started the second on an 8-2 run on the way to a 38-36 edge at halftime.

Phoenix carried a 61-47 lead into the fourth quarter and was ahead by 15 after Mickael Pietrus hit a three-pointer to make it 66-51 with 9:05 left.

The Suns fell to 3-1 on a five-game road trip that ends Monday in Philadelphia...Carter is six points shy of passing former Suns forward Tom Chambers for 36th on the NBA's all-time scoring list.
