Hayward, Jazz down Pelicans
Feb 10, 2015 - 5:21 AM New Orleans, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Gordon Hayward had 32 points, eight assists and seven rebounds as the Utah Jazz defeated the Anthony Davis-less New Orleans Pelicans 100-96 on Monday night. It was Hayward's second straight 30-point game and seventh of the season.
"You've got to step up and be able to make some big-time shots and tonight some of those went down," Hayward said.
Derrick Favors posted 18 points and seven boards and Enes Kanter added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Jazz, who had dropped five of their last seven games coming in.
Davis is day-to-day with a right shoulder sprain after suffering a scary fall in Saturday's game against the Chicago Bulls. After completing an alley-oop dunk, Davis' hands slipped off the rim and he landed hard on his shoulder.
Eric Gordon netted 31 points and Tyreke Evans provided 18 points, 10 helpers and seven boards for New Orleans, which has lost three of its last four contests.
After consecutive left wing 3-pointers from Gordon staked the Pelicans to an 87-86 edge with 4:20 left, Utah answered with the next six points.
Kanter hit a right wing jumper, Hayward hit two foul shots and Dante Exum nailed a left wing jumper in transition for a 92-87 Utah margin with 3:05 to play.
Gordon's fastbreak layup following a Dante Cunningham steal clawed New Orleans within 92-91 a bit later. Hayward, though, responded with a putback and a right wing jumper with 38.4 seconds left to put the game away.
Earlier, the Jazz led 27-25 after a quarter of play, but the Pelicans closed the first half on a 14-3 run to go up 52-42 heading into the break.
Back-to-back Hayward triples to close the third capped a 21-3 Jazz surge and gave them a 71-67 cushion.
"Our third-quarter effort was about as poor as it has been all year. Execution and defensively, we were bad," Pelicans coach Monty Williams said.
Game Notes
Utah scored 24 points off 15 Pelicans turnovers ... New Orleans was 13-of-22 from beyond the arc, but was outrebounded 47-40, outscored 46-36 in the paint and 30-11 in second chance points.
