Curry, Warriors get back on track with win over Raptors

Nov 9, 2010 - 7:22 AM Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Stephen Curry led all scorers with 34 points and Monta Ellis added 28, as the Golden State Warriors held on for a 109-102 win over the Toronto Raptors at Air Canada Centre.

Curry scored 16 of his points in the fourth quarter, while David Lee chipped in with a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out for Golden State, which recovered from a 102-97 setback at Detroit on Sunday to win for the third time in four games. Ellis left late in the fourth quarter with an undisclosed injury after getting knocked to the floor while driving toward the basket.

Jarrett Jack had a team-high 24 points and eight assists for the Raptors, who have dropped five straight after winning their lone game of the season against Cleveland on October 29. Linas Kleiza added 20 points and seven boards in defeat.

"Our energy wasn't where it needed to be at the defensive end," Toronto head coach Jay Triano said. "They got some momentum and by the time we got aggressive with our defense it was too late, they already built confidence shooting the basketball."

Toronto scored the first eight points of the game, but the Warriors quickly turned things around and had a 26-19 lead after the opening quarter.

Then, with Golden State ahead by eight, 34-26, nearly four minutes into the second, the visitors went on a 11-0 run. Rodney Carney started the burst with a three-pointer and jumper, and Jeremy Lin ended it with two free throws for a 45-26 game with 4:31 left in the half. The Warriors took a 55-41 lead into the break.

Curry's finger-roll basket approaching the midway point of the third extended the Warriors lead to 69-49. However, Toronto answered with a 12-4 run a short time later to get within nine at 75-66 following Leandro Barbosa's fadeaway jumper with 2:49 to play in the period. Golden State held an 84-72 edge after three.

"Any time you get a lead, you want to get the kill punch, basically," Curry said. "Keep pressing on the gas and keep attacking. Third quarter we made some careless turnovers and played a little lackadaisical on offense, and they got some easy transition baskets and got the crowd back into it."

The Warriors held a seemingly comfortable 90-74 margin in the early portion of the fourth, but Toronto ran off 12 straight, with Sonny Weems accounting for six and the Raptors cutting the deficit to four with 7:15 to play.

Curry's bucket put his squad ahead 99-90 with 4:28 left, but a pair at the stripe from Amir Johnson and a Weems dunk made it a five-point game less than a minute later. An Ellis three-point play and a triple from Curry restored the Warriors' double-digit advantage, 105-94, with 2:38 to go, and they held on in the remaining time on the clock.

Barbosa had seven points and three steals before leaving with a left shoulder strain...Weems and Johnson each finished with 12 points...The Warriors, who shot 52.7 percent from the field, have now won four straight and six of their past seven meetings with the Raptors...Toronto made 45.8 percent of its shots.
