Rose outduels Kobe as Bulls finally top Lakers
Dec 11, 2010 - 6:51 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Derrick Rose poured in 29 points, including nine in the fourth quarter, as the Bulls snapped a seven-game series skid against the Los Angeles Lakers with an 88-84 triumph at United Center.Carlos Boozer tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulls, who have won four in a row overall. This was their first victory over the Lakers since December 19, 2006 in the Windy City. Luol Deng netted 14 points and Kyle Korver 13 in the win. Rose also had nine assists.
"It feels good, we're moving in the right direction," Rose said. "We're playing defense toward the end. We let them outrebound us in the last quarter, tip outs and a lot of second-chance shots, but tonight it worked out fine."
Kobe Bryant had 23 points and seven assists for the Lakers, who had a season- low in scoring and had a three-game winning streak broken. Bryant (26,398) moved into 11th place on the NBA's all-time scoring list, passing John Havlicek (26,395). Dominique Wilkins (26,668) is in 10th place.
Pau Gasol added 21 points, eight boards and four blocks for the Lakers, while Lamar Odom contributed 18 points and eight rebounds.
Korver's two free throws widened Chicago's lead to 81-69 with 4:38 remaining, but the Bulls got sloppy with turnovers. That allowed the Lakers to rally and Derek Fisher's three-ball from the left corner drew LA within 83-80 with 48.4 seconds left.
Rose then took matters into his own hands, dribbling between two defenders before rising up to hit a foul-line jumper with 25.2 seconds left.
"They made some tough ones there that kept the lead stretched," Bryant said. "We were trying to build a little momentum."
A put-back from Matt Barnes had the visitors within three again with 16.2 seconds left, but Rose made 1-of-2 from the charity stripe with 14.9 on the clock for an 86-82 margin.
Bryant then split the difference on his two free throws with 11.9 seconds left, and Chicago sealed the win at the foul line when Ronnie Brewer made two with 10.7 ticks left.
The Lakers surged to a 13-point lead in the first quarter. Odom's put-back jam moved the score to 22-9.
The Bulls trailed 22-12 after 12 minutes, but limited the Lakers to four made field goals in the second. Rose and Korver combined for 17 points in the period, helping Chicago gain the lead going into halftime. The Bulls closed the half on a 19-3 spurt with Rose's floater ending the half for a 36-32 difference.
It was tight for most of the third quarter, but the Bulls pulled away late in the period and led by as many as 10 before going to the fourth with a 66-58 advantage.
