Jackson leads Bobcats over Grizzlies
Jan 11, 2011 - 7:48 AM Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - Stephen Jackson scored a game-high 27 points as the Charlotte Bobcats stretched their winning streak to three games, topping the Memphis Grizzlies 96-82 at Time Warner Cable Arena.D.J. Augustin added 18 points and nine assists for the Bobcats, who are also 2-0 on a current three-game homestand. Matt Carroll contributed 12 points in a reserve role for Charlotte.
"I thought our defense was excellent tonight," Bobcats head coach Paul Silas said. "We kept them off the boards...We really contested shots and switched when we were supposed to...I thought that was the reason we prevailed."
Zach Randolph, who earlier in the day was named Western Conference player of the week, finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Rudy Gay, Tony Allen and Mike Conley each scored 13 for Memphis, which has dropped two straight on a three-game road swing.
Marc Gasol added 10 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
Jackson and Augustin led Charlotte with nine points apiece in the first quarter as the Bobcats took a 22-15 lead after the opening 12 minutes.
Up nine, 29-20, 3 1/2 minutes into the second, Charlotte used a 11-2 run, capped by a Boris Diaw turnaround jumper at the three-minute mark, to widen its advantage to 40-22.
Memphis responded with a Gay three-pointer on the far end, and the teams traded baskets down the stretch. Randolph connected on a layup at the buzzer to trim Memphis' deficit to 44-31 at the half.
Charlotte controlled most of the first half, holding a 16-2 advantage in fastbreak points and tallying seven blocks, while holding the Grizzlies to a season-low 31 points at the half.
The Bobcats took a 68-57 lead into the final stanza after a back-and-forth third quarter, and opened up the fourth on a 15-4 run, capped by a Jackson jumper, to put the game away for good. Charlotte's lead never fell below 14 down the stretch.
"We were down eight in the third quarter and down 11 at the start of the fourth," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said. "We didn't have enough guys that were making shots that could help us win the game."
