Hornets streak into Atlanta

Jan 21, 2011 - 4:07 PM (Sports Network) - A pair of playoff contenders collide in Dixie Friday night as the streaking New Orleans Hornets shoot for their seventh straight win when they take on the homestanding Atlanta Hawks.

The Hornets needed an extra frame to get their sixth straight victory on Wednesday when Marcus Thornton's layup with 6.6 seconds remaining in overtime gave New Orleans the lead, and the Hornets held on for a 103-102 victory over Memphis.

The Grizzlies squandered two chances to win the game when Mike Conley was stripped at the end of regulation and Rudy Gay missed a 15-foot jumper at the overtime buzzer.

Chris Paul had 20 points and 12 assists to lead the Hornets and started the fast break transition that led to Thornton's go-ahead basket in overtime. David West added 19 points and 11 rebounds and Thornton scored 17 off the bench.

"It was a good win. It was hard fought. It might be ugly sometimes, but we got it done," Thornton said.

The Hawks, meanwhile, won for seventh time in eight tries on Tuesday in Miami when Jamal Crawford supplied 19 points off the bench, and Atlanta topped the Heat, 93-89, in an overtime thriller of its own at AmericanAirlines Arena.

Joe Johnson added 19 points to go along with 10 assists for Atlanta, which has won two straight. Both Josh Smith and Mike Bibby scored 15 points, while Smith added 12 rebounds for the victors.

"We just hung in there," Hawks coach Larry Drew said. "We got off to a really good start, especially that first quarter. We weathered the storm, and we were only down one at the end of the half. I though that was a pretty good position to be in, being in this building."

The news wasn't all good for Atlanta, however. Starting center Al Horford sprained his right ankle in Miami and is expected to miss at least two games. Horford joins forward Marvin Williams, who is slated miss a 10th straight game with a back injury tonight, on the bench.

New Orleans, which is 10-11 on the road this season, has won three straight on the road but will be facing a Hawks team that is very tough in Atlanta, compiling an 11-1 mark at Philips Arena since Nov. 22.

The Hornets have won two straight matchups in the series, including a 93-86 triumph in the Big Easy on Dec. 26.
