Dallas edges New Jersey on Nowitzki's late jumper

Jan 23, 2011 - 6:41 AM Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Dirk Nowitzki made the game-winning jumper with six seconds remaining, as the Dallas Mavericks snuck past the New Jersey Nets, 87-86.

Nowitzki ended with 23 points and seven rebounds for the Mavericks, who had lost seven of eight coming in. Tyson Chandler tallied 19 points and eight boards for Dallas, which got 11 points off the bench from Jason Terry.

Brook Lopez had 24 points and six rebounds for the Nets, who saw a brief two- game winning streak come to an end. Devin Harris chipped in with 15 points and 11 assists.

The Mavs scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to take a 75-68 lead on two Shawn Marion free throws.

Trailing 82-75 with 4:44 to play, New Jersey put together an 11-2 run to take the lead.

Lopez, who tallied seven points during the surge, got things going with five straight points. Sasha Vujacic then made a three-pointer to give the Nets an 83-82 edge. Lopez added two free throws after J.J. Barea made a jumper for Dallas.

Harris capped the burst with a 1-of-2 from the foul line to give New Jersey an 86-84 lead with 51.9 seconds to go. Nowitzki's layup was blocked at the other end, but Chandler got the rebound and was fouled. He made one free throw to cut the gap to one with 35.2 ticks remaining.

A missed Harris jumper led to Nowitzki's game-winning seven-foot jumper with six seconds left. Nowitzki was just 7-of-24 from the field, but was happy that a bad night ended on a good note.

"I'm running in quicksand out there. I couldn't make a move. Even the last one -- it really didn't want to go in, but it kind of rolled up there," said Nowitzki. "It was an ugly game."

Jordan Farmar was way off the mark with a three-pointer as time expired.

"We were inconsistent at times with how we wanted to attack," Nets head coach Avery Johnson said.

Despite that, the Nets held a 26-22 edge after 12 minutes of action. But Dallas stormed back in the second period to take a 48-45 lead into the locker room.

A tight third quarter resulted in a 68-68 tie heading to the fourth.
