Spurs roll into New Jersey
Feb 14, 2011 - 3:43 PM (Sports Network) - San Antonio's "Rodeo Road Trip" makes its next stop in the Garden State on Valentine's Day, when Gregg Popovich's club aims to tame the lowly New Jersey Nets at The Rock. The Spurs, who sport the NBA's best record at 45-9, improved to 5-2 on their nine-game trek after Saturday's 118-94 win in the nation's capital. Tony Parker set the tone in that one by scoring 14 of his 18 points in the opening quarter, and the Spurs bounced back from their worst offensive output of the season during the resounding win over Washington.
George Hill also totaled 18 points for San Antonio, which surged to a 27-point halftime lead and beat the Wizards for the 11th straight time. The Spurs had more points (72) at the half than they scored all of Friday night in a 77-71 setback at Philadelphia.
"Coming back from a tough game last night where we didn't shoot the ball well, tonight everything was going in," Parker said. "Sometimes I don't even try to understand basketball. It's weird."
San Antonio, which is 20-7 overall on the road, will finish its long trek with a visit to Central Division-leading Chicago after tonight's contest.
The Nets, meanwhile, opened a brief two-game homestand in losing fashion on Saturday when Wilson Chandler started in place of an injured Amare Stoudemire and scored 21 points, leading the New York Knicks to a 105-95 victory over New Jersey.
New York was 16-of-34 from three-point range in the game, including 6-for-7 in the fourth quarter.
"They lived and died with it and they lived," said Nets head coach Avery Johnson.
Devin Harris scored 22 points to lead the Nets, who had a two-game winning streak snapped. Brook Lopez added 19 points and Sasha Vujacic had 15 in the loss. New Jersey hasn't won three straight since a four-game run from January 31- February 7, 2009.
The Nets snapped an ugly 14-game skid to the Spurs with a 90-84 win in their old home, the IZOD Center, in March of last season. San Antonio is 15-4 in the past 19 matchups between the two teams.
