Streaking teams collide when Grizz visit Pelicans
Mar 12, 2014 - 1:51 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Memphis Grizzlies seem to be peaking at the right time and will hit the road for three straight games, starting with Wednesday's meeting with the New Orleans Pelicans. The Grizzlies will make stops in Toronto and Philadelphia as well and have a 17-12 mark on the road.
Memphis won its third straight game and 10th in 13 tries with Tuesday's 109-99 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers thanks to Marc Gasol's 19 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Zach Randolph had a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Mike Conley netted 17 points for the Grizzlies, who shot a sizzling 56 percent.
"It was big for us to be able to play from the lead and just kind of keep holding them off," Memphis head coach David Joerger said.
The Grizzlies, currently seeded seventh in the West, outscored the Blazers 54-36 in the paint.
New Orleans enters Wednesday's tilt with Memphis riding a three-game winning streak since an eight-game slide and is 2-0 on a six-game homestand.
The well-rested Pelicans needed overtime to dispose of the Denver Nuggets 111-107 on Sunday and were led by Anthony Davis' 32 points, 17 rebounds and six blocks. Anthony Morrow nailed a jumper from the top of the key with 0.9 seconds left in regulation to tie the game for New Orleans.
"I drove hard to get to that spot I wanted to be in. I knew Ty (Lawson) was a little bit shorter, so I wanted to shoot over him and I was able to get my shot off," Morrow said of the key bucket.
Tyreke Evans netted 20 points for the Pelicans, who scored 17 of the 30 points in the extra session.
New Orleans will also welcome Portland, Boston and Toronto to the Big Easy and has a 15-14 mark at home. It is only 1-5 at home against Southwest opponents.
The Pelicans are 3-0 against Memphis this season and have won four straight and five of the last six meetings between the division foes. The Grizzlies have lost 13 of 17 trips to the Big Easy.
