Hawks snap 6-game skid in win over Sixers
Apr 1, 2014 - 4:28 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Louis Williams scored 11 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Atlanta Hawks beat the Philadelphia 76ers, 103-95, on Monday.The Hawks snapped a six-game skid and sent the Sixers to their 13th straight road loss in the process.
Paul Millsap added 28 points and 17 rebounds for the Hawks, who hold the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Jeff Teague and Kyle Korver tallied 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Thaddeus Young made five 3-pointers en route to 23 points for the Sixers, who beat the Detroit Pistons on Saturday to snap an NBA record-tying 26-game losing streak. James Anderson and Michael Carter-Williams donated 19 and 16 points, respectively, with Carter-Williams adding nine boards and nine assists.
"They were just more aggressive," Young said. "They got into us defensively. The aggressive nature of the game rose and we just didn't execute towards the end."
Trailing 92-89 with 3:08 to play, the Hawks closed out the game on a 14-3 run. Williams made two key 3-pointers during the surge, with his second making it a 100-95 contest. Atlanta went 3-of-4 from the foul line down in the final 22.8 seconds to seal the victory.
"He deserved to be on the court. It was great for our whole group for Lou to have a night like that. He was what we needed down the stretch," Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer said.
Earlier, the Sixers led by as many as 13 in the first quarter and took a 31-18 edge into the second.
Atlanta scored the first seven points of the second period to close the gap. The home team continued to trail and faced a 53-43 deficit at the break.
Korver and Millsap made consecutive 3-pointers to start the third stanza. The Hawks kept it close and ended the frame on a 9-0 spurt, which DeMarre Carroll capped with a layup for a 75-73 lead.
It remained a close game in the fourth until the Hawks made their late run.
Game Notes
The Hawks won all three of this season's meetings with Philadelphia ... 76ers forward Arnett Moultrie was suspended five games without pay for violating the terms of the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program ... Korver returned to the lineup after missing six games with back spasms.
