Turkoglu's foul shots help Magic edge 76ers

Feb 2, 2008 - 4:15 AM PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Hedo Turkoglu and the Orlando Magic continue to have the touch on the road.

Turkoglu scored 23 points, including two free throws in the final seconds, as the Magic edged the Philadelphia 76ers, 108-106, on Friday.

Rashard Lewis scored 18 points and All-Star Dwight Howard added 17 and 14 rebounds for Orlando, which improved its league-best road record to 18-10.

"Last year, we were terrible on the road," Howard said. "We wanted to change that. In order to be a good team, you got to win on the road. For the most part, we've done a good job of playing on the other team's floor and just trying to beat them."

Turkoglu, who was left off the East's All-Star roster on Thursday despite averaging a career-high 19.4 points entering the contest, sealed the victory with 2.4 seconds left.

With the scored tied at 106-106, the 28-year-old from Turkey drove to the basket and was fouled by Andre Iguodala, who thought he had reached in for the steal.

"They called the foul and he made the free throws," Iguodala said. "Of course, I'm going to say that it wasn't a foul, but it doesn't matter. It's over with."

"He hit my arm so there was no way that it could not be a foul," Turkoglu said. "If he hit the ball, it should have gone to the floor. The ball bounced really high. I'm glad the official made the call, and I was able to finish it."

Turkoglu nailed both foul shots to give the Magic a two-point lead. Turkoglu, who connected on 9-of-15 from the floor, has averaged 24.5 points and 6.6 rebounds in his last seven games.

"I am having a good season," Turkoglu said. "I'm just focusing on finishing the season strong and have a better shot at an All-Star bid next year."

The 76ers had one more chance on the other end but, on the inbounds pass, Howard deflected Andre Miller's feed - intended for Samuel Dalembert. The ball was collected by Keith Bogans as time expired to give Orlando its fourth straight win here.

"We had a couple of curls set up and we had Andre popping out (for a shot)," 76ers coach Maurice Cheeks said. "Unfortunately, the ball got tipped away, and we didn't get an attempt."

Carlos Arroyo scored 14 points and Maurice Evans scored 13 for the Magic, who shot 54 percent (40-of-74) and became the third Eastern Conference team to reach 30 wins.

"We do show a great toughness in games," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "There has been a lot of games where we've had the lead, lost it and we come back. That's got to be the sixth or seventh time that has happened, so we do show a lot of resolve."

Miller had 23 points and 11 assists and reserve Louis Williams scored 15 of his 20 in the first half for Philadelphia, which shot 50 percent (42-of-84) and has dropped five of six against Orlando.

"You look at this game and you know that we're fighting," Williams said. "We're not folding to these (winning) teams, we're playing good basketball right now. We can take a lot of positives from this game."
