Clippers burn Blazers in double overtime
Dec 13, 2008 - 7:44 AM By James Reddick PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterPORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- It wasn't an exact three-beat. To the Portland Trail Blazers, Friday's loss to the Los Angeles Clippers had to sting the same as Tuesday's burn by the Orlando Magic.
Baron Davis hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer in regulation and combined with Zach Randolph for 65 points as the Clippers defeated the Trail Blazers, 120-112, in double overtime.
Brandon Roy scored a career-high 38 points in the loss.
"This one hurts even more than Orlando," he said. "We had another game and let it slip."
Davis, who had 27 points, hit a jumper with 27 seconds left in the extra session to make it 106-104, but Roy answered with just under 16 ticks left to knot the game.
Davis missed a 15-foot shot at the end of overtime, sending the teams to a second extra session.
Randolph scored six points and Davis added a driving shot as the Clippers used an 8-0 run in the second overtime to take control.
This marked the second straight loss at the Rose Garden for Portland, which opened the season with seven straight home wins. The Magic's Hedo Turkoglu hit a prayer at the end of the game on Tuesday to sink Portland.
The victory was the Clippers' 16th in Portland against 76 losses all-time.
Al Thornton knocked down a jumper with 21 seconds left in regulation to make it 94-92.
Steve Blake went to the foul line and missed two free throws with 19 seconds left. Blake was 31-of-33 from the line entering the game but missed four free throws in the final minute.
"I'm disappointed," he said. "It's tough being the guy that lost the game."
Blake appeared to redeem himself, picking off a Davis pass with 8.1 seconds left. He knocked down 1-of-2 free throws to make it 97-94.
Davis was 0-of-12 in late-game 3-pointers this season ... until knocking down a shot at the buzzer to tie the game at 97-97.
"Finally got that monkey off my back," he said. "There will be a lot more shots like that that I'm going to take and make."
Roy went to the locker room after being injured in the third quarter. He emerged with two fingers taped together in the fourth and still found a way to score 38 points, dish nine assists and play 53 minutes.
"He's so good at making reads, knowing just how to maneuver and keep us in the game," Blazers coach Nate McMillan said about his star player.
Roy became the first Blazer to score 30 points in three consecutive games since Randolph in 2006. The Blazers are 0-3 during Roy's surge.
Randolph, meanwhile, led the Clippers with 38 points and 11 rebounds in 48 minutes.
"I played here, it definitely is motivating to try and get the win, plus, we needed a win anyway," Randolph said. "We had a lot of energy and focus.
"Portland is good. ... I miss everything, I miss the rain, everything, my teammates, the young guys, I was here since I was 19. I still got my house here, I like the city."
Eric Gordon added 17 points for the Clippers. Thornton added 16.
LaMarcus Aldridge scored 22 points in 54 minutes for Portland. Greg Oden collected 15 points and 15 rebounds.
