Spurs try to maintain No. 2 spot vs. Wizards

Mar 6, 2009 - 11:11 AM Washington (14-47) at San Antonio (40-20) 8:30 p.m. EST

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Having dropped two of their on their recent three-game road trip, the San Antonio Spurs return home on Friday night as they try to retain their hold the No. 2 spot in the Western Conference.

The Spurs host the lowly Washington Wizards to kick off a four-game homestand.

San Antonio is currently one game ahead of No. 3 Denver (40-22) for the second seed, but that placement is tenuous - New Orleans, Houston, Utah and Portland are all within 2 1/2 games as well.

The Spurs suffered a 107-102 setback to the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday, despite Tony Parker's 37-point effort. Tim Duncan, in his third game back since missing three contests with a sore knee, had a rare off-night, going just 7-of-21 from the field.

The Wizards, meanwhile, are making a play for the worst record in the NBA. They have dropped three in a row, including Oklahoma City's 88-83 victory on Wednesday.
