Brust boosts Badgers past Ducks, into Sweet 16

Brust swished a go-ahead triple from the right wing with just over one minute remaining to boost the Wisconsin Badgers to an 85-77 triumph over the Oregon Ducks on Saturday in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

Oregon's Joseph Young drained a trey with just under three minutes left to give the Ducks a 75-74 lead, but after the teams exchanged empty possessions, the Badgers retrieved three straight offensive rebounds before Brust buried the go-ahead shot from beyond the arc.

"As soon as I let it go, I knew it was going down, which was a good feeling," Brust said of his 3-pointer. "Just knew we had to get back and play some defense because the game wasn't over."

After Young missed a layup on Oregon's next touch, Traevon Jackson hit two free throws and Jason Calliste finished a layup before Jackson hit another from the line, but left the door open by missing the second free throw.

A jump ball on the rebound saw possession go to the Ducks trailing by three, but Young was off the mark on a right corner triple and Sam Dekker drilled two free throws with 10.4 seconds left, essentially sealing the outcome.

Jackson finished with 16 points and eight rebounds, Frank Kaminsky scored 19 and Brust and Dekker tallied 12 points apiece for the Badgers (28-7), who advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third time in four years.

Wisconsin, the second seed in the West Region, awaits the winner of Sunday's third-round matchup between Baylor and Creighton in the Sweet 16.

Young poured in a game-high 29 points, while Calliste supplied 20 points for the Ducks (24-10), who made a run to the Sweet 16 last year before being bounced by eventual national champion Louisville.

Young and Calliste carried Oregon to a double-digit halftime lead, as the duo combined for 31 points to stake the Ducks to a 49-37 edge at the break.

The Badgers battled back early in the second half, opening the frame on a 17-6 surge that Kaminsky capped with five straight points to get Wisconsin within one, 55-54.

"They started hitting some 3s and getting easy baskets inside," Oregon head coach Dana Altman said of Wisconsin's run. "Our defensive effort was just not good, and those easy baskets fueled their energy and then we're in big trouble."

After Mike Moser and Brust exchanged triples shortly after, Kaminsky knocked down a right elbow jumper to give the Badgers a 59-58 lead, their first since taking a 10-9 edge less than five minutes into the game.

A Brust 3-pointer pushed the spread to six with 10:38 left, and after Oregon answered with four straight points to get within two, Dekker drilled a trey for a 70-65 lead with just over seven minutes to play.

Young responded with a triple of his own and then added a layup before a pair of free throws from Moser made it 72-70 in favor of the Ducks with four minutes left.

The Badgers rallied back with four straight points to retake the lead, but Young drained a triple for a 75-74 Oregon lead with 2:50 left.

Early on, a three-point play from Nigel Hayes had Wisconsin within 30-29 with 7:22 left in the first half, but Young netted 11 points as the Ducks closed the half on a 19-8 burst to take a 49-37 spread into the break.
