Holmes shoots Texas A&M past Oklahoma State

Feb 20, 2011 - 5:47 AM Stillwater, OK (Sports Network) - B.J. Holmes was 8-of-8 from the free throw line, hitting the go-ahead shots with 14 seconds left, as No. 21 Texas A&M survived with a 67-66 win over Oklahoma State at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Holmes finished with 14 points while David Loubeau notched 22 points for the Aggies (21-5, 8-4 Big 12), who have won four straight. Khris Middleton added 12 points and seven boards in the win.

"I think what really helped us tonight is that we have been in so many close games and we are used to it," said Texas A&M head coach Mark Turgeon. "It showed down the stretch for us."

Reger Dowell posted 22 points for Oklahoma State (16-10, 4-8), which has lost three straight. Keiton Page and Jean-Paul Olukemi had 12 and 11 points, respectively, in the loss.

"It's a huge disappointment," Page said. "We had to have this game. We're at home with our crowd. We're tough to beat here in Gallagher(-Iba Arena), so it's disappointing to lose this type of game in our own gym."

With 1:15 to go in regulation, Olukemi drove down the left side of the court and finished a layup while getting fouled by Loubeau to get the Cowboys within 63-62. It was Loubeau's fifth foul, but Olukemi missed the free throw and the Aggies got the ball back with less than a minute to play.

Middleton was fouled on the other end of the court and made both free throws to put the Aggies up three, but Dowell made a layup to cut the deficit back to one with 33 seconds left.

During the ensuing possession, Texas A&M couldn't get the ball across the half-court line in the allotted 10 seconds. The turnover gave the Cowboys the ball and Dowell was fouled on a hard drive toward the basket. He made both free throws for a 66-65 Oklahoma State edge with 15 ticks left.

But at the other end, Holmes calmly made two from the line to put the Aggies back up by one for good. On the final possession of the game, Matt Pilgrim's three-point attempt was too strong and the Aggies escaped with the win.

The Cowboys held a 30-29 advantage after a tightly played first half. Loubeau claimed the lead for the Aggies during the first possession of the second half, and the game was back-and-forth from there.

The Cowboys fell to 11-2 at home this season...The series is still in favor of OSU, 30-16. However, the Aggies have won eight of the last 12 meetings...Texas A&M was 27-of-35 from the free throw line, while OSU was 23-of-29...The game featured 14 ties and 13 lead changes.
