No Lie-on: Penn State stuns No. 4 Michigan

Feb 28, 2013 - 6:14 AM University Park, PA (Sports Network) - Jermaine Marshall scored a game-high 25 points and shot 6-of-10 from 3-point range, while D.J. Newbill had 17 points and five assists as Penn State upset No. 4 Michigan, 84-78, to pick up its first Big Ten victory of the season after a 14-game drought.

Ross Travis registered a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Nittany Lions (9-18, 1-14 Big Ten), who had lost 18 straight conference games dating back to last season and won for the first time since Dec. 29.

"Words cannot express how I feel right now," Penn State coach Patrick Chambers said. "We were on a 14-game losing streak and they still came with a great approach. They didn't lose the fight or the fire, and I knew we were going to win one down the line. What a great night to do it on senior night."

Fittingly, on Senior Night at Bryce Jordan Center, Sasa Borovnjak and Nick Colella -- the Lions' only seniors -- had nine points apiece in the victory.

Tim Hardaway Jr. had 19 points and seven boards and Trey Burke scored 18 points while dishing out six assists for the Wolverines (23-5, 10-5), who saw their two-game winning streak come to an end.

Penn State trailed by 11 with nine minutes to play after Glenn Robinson III slammed home a missed 3-point attempt, but the Nittany Lions weren't done yet.

The home team fought back with a 14-6 surge, highlighted by three 3- pointers -- two by Marshall and one by Newbill -- before Travis Ross stole an errant pass and went the length of the court to bring his team within 74-71 with 5 1/2 minutes remaining.

Under one minute later, Marshall added to the frenzy as he tied the game with a triple from the top of the key and the Bryce Jordan Center erupted.

As the contest winded down with under three minutes to play, Newbill's tough driving lay-in made it 79-75 with 2:24 to play.

Burke went to the charity stripe and made both shots to bring Michigan within one, though Marshall responded with a finger roll layup just 15 seconds later to make it 81-78 with 1:06 remaining.

Robinson had a great look on a reverse lay-in on Michigan's next possession, but the ball rolled off the rim and Penn State grabbed the rebound to hold on for the momentous triumph.

Borovnjak capped off Senior Night by nailing two foul shots with 15 seconds left to secure the victory.

"What you saw today is why we all love college basketball," Michigan coach John Beilein said. "I've been seeing this coming with Pat Chambers' team for the last month. We've watched a lot of video, they're just really getting used to playing well together. They're making every extra pass, they took four or five charges today, I don't even know if we took a charge -- I think we might have took one. They're playing great team basketball and they beat us fair and square."

Michigan led, 39-36, at the break before opening the second half on an 8-0 sprint to build a double-digit cushion just over two minutes in. Hardaway capped off the quick flurry with an alley-oop slam to give his team a 47-36 edge. Penn State trailed by as many as 15 with 10:39 remaining.

In a competitive first half which saw both teams go toe-to-toe, it was Michigan who took a three-point margin into the break. The Wolverines dominated the play in the paint after 20 minutes of play, outscoring the home team 24-10. Penn State, though, forced 10 Michigan turnovers resulting in 15 points to stay within striking distance.

Game Notes

The win marked the first over a top-five opponent for PSU since the Nittany Lions defeated No. 5 North Carolina in the second round of the 2001 NCAA tournament ... Penn State is just 4-18 against Michigan since 2001-02 ... Marshall had 19 points and four 3-pointers in the second half ... PSU is 8-15 at home this season ... All five of the Wolverines' defeats have come in conference play on the road.
