No. 9 Wisconsin has Big Ten title in sights

Feb 28, 2008 - 12:21 PM No. 15 Michigan St (22-5) at No. 9 Wisconsin (23-4) 9:00 pm EST

MADISON, Wisconsin (Ticker) -- With three conference games remaining, No. 9 Wisconsin is looking to inch closer to the Big Ten title.

The Badgers (23-4, 13-2) face Michigan State (22-5, 10-4) with an opportunity to win at least a share of the conference championship in sight. Wisconsin closes out its Big Ten slate against Penn State and Northwestern, two of the bottom three teams.

Indiana and Purdue are tied with the Badgers for the conference lead, but the Boilermakers have swept the Badgers while Indiana has lost twice to Wisconsin.

After playing three times last year, Thursday's game is the only scheduled contest between the teams this season. The Badgers have won five straight at home, but still trail in the all-time series, 66-56.

Wisconsin can set a school record for most Big Ten wins in a single season, having already tied the mark of 13 set last year. The Badgers are 14-2 at home this season, including 6-1 in the conference.

Senior center/forward Brian Butch leads Wisconsin with averages of 12.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Trevon Hughes averages 12.2 points and junior forward Marcus Landry 11.1 for the Badgers, winners of their last four games.

The Spartans are led offensively by sophomore forward Raymar Morgan at 15.2 points per game. Senior guard Drew Neitzel averages 13.8 points for Michigan State, which is 3-3 in its last six games.
