Stanford stays in Pac-10 hunt with win over Washington
Feb 29, 2008 - 7:13 AM PALO ALTO, California (Ticker) -- Stanford got another big game from Brook Lopez and needed it to hold off pesky Washington.Lopez scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the eighth-ranked Cardinal to an 82-79 victory over the Huskies on Thursday in a Pac-10 Conference matchup.
Stanford (23-4, 12-3 Pac-10) never trailed en route to its third straight victory and remained just one game behind Pac-10 leader UCLA (13-2).
"As long as we keep winning I'll be pleased," Stanford coach Trent Johnson said. "There's always something to work on. We're not dominating the rebounding like we have in the past and we still need to take care of the ball better."
Washington (15-14, 6-10) trailed 34-31 at the half but did not go away quietly. The Huskies hung around and pulled within 81-79 on a 3-pointer by Ryan Appleby with two seconds to play.
Taj Finger then made one free throw for the Cardinal and Appleby got off a desperation shot from beyond halfcourt that was off the mark.
Jon Brockman scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Quincy Pondexter added 19 points for the Huskies, who were 7-of-16 from the free-throw line and remained winless at Maples Pavilion since 1993.
"We were in the game the whole way, but we could have been closer or ahead with some better free-throw shooting," Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said. "It's frustrating to play this hard and well and still lose, but it was overall a very good effort on the road."
Anthony Goods scored 16 points, Mitch Johnson had 14 points and Robin Lopez added 10 for the Cardinal, who have won 10 of their last 11 games.
Stanford hosts No. 22 Washington State on Saturday before closing out the regular season with games in Los Angeles against UCLA next Thursday and Southern California on March 8.
"Everything from here on in will be a dogfight," Johnson said. "There won't be any more double-digit wins. Every team we play from now on is in the (NCAA) tournament or playing to get there or playing for a seed."
