BYU hoping for first tournament win since 1993

Mar 20, 2008 - 11:57 AM No. 9 Texas A&M (24-10) vs. No. 8 BYU (27-7) 7:25 pm EDT

ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) - Brigham Young looks to win in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1993 when it meets Texas A&M in the West Regional on Thursday.

The Cougars (27-7) are the two-time Mountain West regular-season champions, but have lost both years in the tournament title game to UNLV.

Eighth-seeded BYU, which has lost five straight first-round games, came close last season to ending that streak but lost to Xavier, 79-77, in an eight-nine matchup.

Lee Cummard leads the Cougars in scoring at 15.8 points per game. Trent Plaisted is averaging 15.6 and 7.8 rebounds per contest.

The ninth-seeded Aggies (24-10) started strong at 15-1 but struggled down the stretch, particularly on the offensive end.

Texas A&M has a balanced attack with six players averaging between 8.2 and 11.9 points per game, headed by Josh Carter.

BYU won the only previous meeting with the Aggies, 83-81, back on December 28, 1972.

The winner will advance to the second round to face the winner of No. 1 UCLA and No. 16 Mississippi Valley State on Saturday.
