Hasbrouck, Fisher lead Siena's easy upset of Vanderbilt
Mar 22, 2008 - 5:03 AM TAMPA, Florida (Ticker) -- Siena certainly did not appear to be the 13th seed in Friday's contest.Kenny Hasbrouck scored 30 points as the Saints outplayed fourth-seeded Vanderbilt from start to finish, earning an 83-62 victory in the first-round matchup out of the Midwest Regional.
Tay Fisher added 19 points off the bench, making all six of his 3-point attempts for Siena, which will face 12th-seeded Villanova in the second round on Sunday.
The Saints (23-10) scored the game's first five points and never trailed, using a 10-0 burst later in the first half to take a 28-13 bulge with just over nine minutes left before the break.
"I thought establishing the fact that we were going to be the aggressor from the opening tip was absolutely critical," Siena coach Fran McCaffery said. "Not only in terms what have they thought of us, but what our players thought of themselves. We got a lead. And I thought that was very important."
Siena kept the Commodores at bay for the rest of the half and Fisher's fourth 3-pointer of the opening 20 minutes gave the Saints a 46-34 lead at intermission.
"I hit my first couple of threes and they started putting big players on me," Fisher said. "And I knew that I had to use my quickness and keep running off screens, and if that didn't work, just keep running and keep running. It definitely played to my advantage because I was not only getting open shots, I was also helping my team get baskets as well."
Keegan Bell scored five straight points as the Commodores closed within 50-43, but the Saints again pulled away and extended their lead to 67-51 on a dunk by Alex Franklin with seven minutes remaining.
The Commodores (26-8) later closed within nine with three minutes to play, but Siena answered with a 12-0 run - going 10-of-10 from the free throw line - to take an 81-60 bulge with 1:02 remaining.
For the game, Siena shot 57 percent (26-of-46) from the floor, and scored 29 points off 16 Vanderbilt turnovers.
"We congratulate Siena, they were the much better team today," Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings said. "Obviously, we're very disappointed in our play and in the outcome. But when you get to this point in the season, it's really imperative that you play your best. We didn't play our best."
Freshman A.J. Ogilvy scored 18 points and the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, Shan Foster, added 13 for Vanderbilt, which had reached the "Sweet 16" last season.
Foster finished his SEC career ranked second all-time with 367 3-pointers and first in Commodores' history with 2,011 career points.
"This team was a special team this year," Foster said. "We got a lot accomplished. Any time you're able to go 26-8, you know, that's obviously doing something great. Our defense has really let us down today. Like I said before, in the tournament you don't play defense well, then you get beat."
