Gonzaga aims for fifth straight road win vs. Arizona

Dec 14, 2008 - 8:23 AM (4) Gonzaga (7-0) at Arizona (6-2) 6:00 pm. EST

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Gonzaga is enjoying life on the road lately. The fourth-ranked Zags aim for a fifth straight win away from home on Sunday against Arizona in the Desert Classic at U.S. Airways Center.

Gonzaga is off to the best start in school history thanks to impressive road wins over Oklahoma State, Maryland and Tennessee.

The road winning streak reached four games on Wednesday when Josh Heytvelt scored 22 points and Austin Daye added 14 in a 74-52 romp over Washington State.

Heytvelt, who missed 11 games last season following an arrest for possession of hallucinogenic mushrooms, has been a huge reason for the strong start. The senior forward is averaging a team-high 16.3 points and 6.0 rebounds.

The Zags have been hitting on all cylinders, averaging 79.1 points while holding opponents to 58.3 per game.

Gonzaga faces an Arizona team that is in transition, and is not even the best in the state. Arizona State, ranked 20th, faces IUPUI in the other game of this tournament.

Interim coach Russ Pennell is trying to fill Lute Olson's large shoes. Olson, the winningest coach in school history, stepped down prior to the season.

The Wildcats used an 11-0, second-half run to pull away for a 69-56 win over San Diego State on Wednesday. Jordan Hill scored 25 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and dished out six assists.

Arizona has won both meetings between the schools, including a 96-95 double overtime win in the second-round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament.
