Rivals Memphis, Tennessee meet again

Jan 24, 2009 - 11:31 AM No. 24 Memphis (15-3) at Tennessee (12-5) 3:30 pm. EST

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- The last time archrivals Memphis and Tennessee faced off the No. 1 ranking was at stake.

The stakes are not nearly as high this go-round.

The 24th-ranked Tigers seek a 10th straight win on Saturday when they visit the unranked Volunteers, who put an end to Memphis' 47-game home winning streak last season.

Then-No. 2 Tennessee knocked off the top-ranked Tigers, 66-62, on February 23. It was Memphis' only regular-season loss. It also secured the Volunteers' first No. 1 ranking.

Needless to say, there isn't as much hype surrounding this meeting.

Memphis is in transition after losing three starters from the team that fell to Kansas in the national championship game - including the No. 1 pick in the June's NBA draft - Derrick Rose.

As a result, the Tigers got off to a rocky start and fell out of the ESPN/USA Today Top 25. However, Memphis has ripped off nine straight wins since a 72-65 loss to Syracuse on December 20 to jump back into the rankings.

Robert Dozier had 13 points and nine rebounds to lead the Tigers to an 80-52 win over Rice on Wednesday.

Memphis will have a much tougher time in Knoxville, where it has not won since 1994.

Making things tougher is the fact that Tennessee is coming off one of its best showings of the season. Wayne Chism scored 16 of his 20 points in the first half of a 76-63 road win over Vanderbilt on Tuesday.

It was the first game since the Volunteers fell out of the Top 25.

Tennessee has won seven of the last nine meetings and owns a 12-7 advantage in the all-time series.
