McCamey lifts Illinois past Wisconsin

Jan 25, 2009 - 3:53 AM CHAMPAIGN, Illinois (Ticker) -- Demetri McCamey scored 25 points to lead No. 24 Illinois to a 64-57 victory over Wisconsin on Saturday.

McCamey, who entered the contest averaging 11.8 points, shot 6-of-10 from the field and was 11-of-13 from the line to finish with a season high in points for the Illini (17-3, 5-2 Big Ten). His previous high was 23 at Vanderbilt in November.

"He made some big shots, he guarded Bohannon and he never got going," Illinois coach Bruce Weber said. "We were a little tight early because they make it so hard to play loose and free, I was just real proud of the guys. Demetri, we get on him at times, but he was good for us and it was still a great team effort."

Mike Davis scored 10 points and was the only other Illinois player in double figures.

Joe Krabbenhoft scored 16 points for Wisconsin (12-7, 3-4), which has lost four straight Big Ten games for the first time since 1998.

The win was Illinois' first over Wisconsin since January 31, 2006.

"We told our guys the last few years, we haven't had the mental toughness to deal with them. I think we made some progress with that tonight," Weber said. "We had some chances to knock them out and didn't do it, we get it at 11, they get it back to seven-eight, but we didn't give in to them either."

The Illini led, 32-25, at the half and were led by McCamey with 10 points at the break. They then opened the second half with a 13-5 run and held off the Badgers from there.

Wisconsin had lost its last two in overtime, but cold shooting kept the Badgers from getting closer than five in the closing minutes, let alone forcing overtime.

Marcus Landry and Trevon Hughes each scored 13 points for the Badgers, who shot 36 percent (21-of-59) from the field, including 6-of-21 from the arc.
