UConn visits Louisville in Big East clash

Feb 2, 2009 - 7:12 PM No. 1 Connecticut (20-1) at No. 7 Louisville (17-3), 7:00 p.m. EST

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Ticker) -- Two of the Big East Conference's hottest teams meet on Monday when top-ranked Connecticut visits seventh-ranked Louisville.

Both Connecticut (20-1, 9-1 Big East) and Louisville (17-3, 8-0) enter the game on nine-game winning streaks. Only Marquette (11 games), which is the other unbeaten team in the conference, has a longer winning streak in the Big East.

UConn dominated the second half in its last game, rolling to a 94-61 triumph over Providence. It was the widest margin of victory in the Big East this season for the Huskies, who outscored the Friars, 56-27, after the break.

Hasheem Thabeet dominated the inside, notching 15 points, 11 rebounds and 10 blocks for his first career triple-double. A.J. Price scored 19 points and Stanley Robinson had 18 for the Huskies, who are 10-0 in games outside the state of Connecticut.

Louisville has beaten four ranked teams during its winning streak, which includes a win over then-No. 1 Pittsburgh on January 17.

The Cardinals committed 26 turnovers but built up a comfortable halftime lead and held on for a 69-63 victory over West Virginia on Saturday. Louisville led, 45-25, at the break.

Jerry Smith scored 20 points in the win. Earl Clark, who averages a team-leading 13.5 points, was held to a season-low four.

It is the only meeting between the teams this season. UConn won the lone meeting, 69-67, at home last season.
