Utah State rebounds with win over Cal-State Bakersfield

Feb 19, 2009 - 6:39 AM LOGAN, Utah (Ticker) -- No longer the owners of the nation's longest winning streak, Utah State made sure it did not start its first losing skid of the season.

Stavon Williams scored 13 points and Tai Wesley had 11 as the 23rd-ranked Aggies bounced back with a 78-57 triumph over Cal-State Bakersfield in a non-conference contest on Wednesday.

Gary Wilkinson added nine points and 10 rebounds for Utah State (25-2), which had its 19-game winning streak snapped at Boise State on Saturday.

It was a school-record 32nd straight home win for Utah State, which visits Saint Mary's in another non-conference game on Saturday.

"I'm not sure we played that well," Aggies coach Stew Morrill told the Salt Lake Tribune. "But we did what we needed to do. We'll take it and get ready for St. Mary's."

Cal-State Bakersfield led by one with over six minutes left in the first half but Utah State took over from there.

The Roadrunners missed their last nine shots to end the session and Williams knocked down three 3-pointers as the Aggies closed the half on a 16-0 run to take a 41-26 bulge at the break.

"(The basket) was pretty big," Williams told the newspaper. "Once the second one fell, I knew more were coming."

Utah State kept Cal-State Bakersfield at bay throughout the second half as Jared Quayle and Jaxon Myaer made consecutive shots from the arc to ignite an 11-1 run, giving the Aggies a 61-40 bulge with 11:50 to play.

Cal-State Bakersfield tried to make a game of it, putting together a 10-0 spurt to close within 69-57 with 4:28 left, but that would be as close as it could get.

The Aggies shot 52 percent (28-of-54) from the floor, including 11-of-20 from the arc. Utah State had nine players score at least seven points.

"We won't even dissect this game," Morrill told the Salt Lake Tribune. "We did what we needed to do. We got guys some time."

Trent Blakley scored 14 points and Alex Johnson had 13 to lead the Roadrunners (6-20), who have dropped five straight games.
