Griffin, Oklahoma go for 14th straight win

Feb 21, 2009 - 3:33 PM No. 2 Oklahoma (25-1) at Texas (17-8), 9:00 p.m. EST

AUSTIN, Texas (Ticker) -- With top-ranked Connecticut losing earlier in the week, Oklahoma may have the inside track to the new No. 1 ranking in Monday's coaches' poll.

The second-ranked Sooners hope to make their case as the country's top team when they visit Texas in a Big 12 Conference matchup on Saturday.

Oklahoma (25-1, 11-0 Big 12) has won 13 straight games and will be competing with No. 3 North Carolina and No. 4 Pittsburgh for the new top spot in the poll. UConn lost to Pittsburgh, 76-68, on Monday.

The Sooners may have the top player in the nation in Blake Griffin, who is coming off a 40-point, 23-rebound performance in Oklahoma's 95-74 triumph over Texas Tech last Saturday. The sophomore is averaging 22.8 and 14.2 this season.

Expected to contend with Oklahoma and Kansas for the conference crown at the beginning of the season, Texas (17-8, 6-5) has struggled in conference play.

Gary Johnson scored 17 points and Damion James had 16 as the Longhorns lost at Texas A&M, 81-66, on Monday.

A.J. Abrams, who is averaging a team-high 16.8 points per contest, scored just seven on 3-of-12 shooting in the loss.
