Gonzaga finishes undefeated run through WCC

Mar 1, 2009 - 4:49 AM SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Matt Bouldin scored 15 points to lead No. 17 Gonzaga to a 58-47 victory over San Diego on Saturday.

Gonzaga (23-5, 14-0 WCC) won its 21st straight West Coast Conference game and wrapped up its third undefeated conference season since 2003-04.

Jeremy Pargo scored 12 points and Josh Heytvelt and Micah Downs each added 11 for the Bulldogs, who have won nine straight regular-season conference titles.

"It was a good win for us to come down here and win a grinder style game," Gonzaga coach Mark Few said. "To cap off a 14-0 season is a tremendous accomplishment. I'm really proud of our guys."

Gyno Pomare and De'Jon Jackson had 12 points each for San Diego (15-15, 6-8), which defeated Gonzaga in last season's WCC tournament championship game.

The Bulldogs, who are the top seed in the WCC tournament and have a bye into the semi's, limited the Toreros to 38 percent (16-of-42) shooting from the field. San Diego managed only 18 points in the first half as Gonzaga built an eight-point lead.

"Our defense really got us going," Few said. "We've been playing good D all year. It's been pretty effective for us. we were a little bit lethargic on offense and a little slow and it was our defense that really got us going."

San Diego will be No. 5 seed in the WCC Tournament and meets Loyola Marymount in the first round on Friday.

The Toreros led 15-10 midway through the first half, but managed just one field goal before the half as the Bulldogs went on a 16-3 run to take control.

Pargo scored eight points in the burst.
