Providence, Villanova meet in regular-season finale

Mar 5, 2009 - 11:11 AM Providence (18-11) at No. 16 Villanova (24-6) 7:00 p.m. EST

VILLANOVA, Pennsylvania (Ticker) -- Providence has one final chance to impress the NCAA Tournament Committee in the regular season.

The Friars look to improve their resume on Thursday when they conclude their campaign against 16th-ranked Villanova.

Providence (18-11, 10-7 Big East) is in the top half of the Big East standings and can earn an automatic berth to the "Big Dance" by winning the conference tournament in Madison Square Garden next week.

However, the Friars would prefer to have a spot in the 65-team field locked up when they head to New York and a win over the Wildcats could do the trick.

Providence is 4-5 over its last nine games but is coming off a 73-66 victory over Rutgers on Sunday. The win came just days after the Friars upset then-No. 1 Pittsburgh, 81-73, on February 24.

Villanova (24-6, 12-5) had a three-game win streak snapped against Georgetown on Saturday but rebounded with an emphatic 77-60 victory at Notre Dame on Monday.
