Harvin leads No. 15 'Noles to 85-64 win over BC

Jan 25, 2010 - 1:13 AM TALLAHASSEE, Fla.(AP) -- Alysha Harvin led Florida State's latest 3-point barrage.

Harvin made six of No. 15 Florida State's season-high 11 long-range jumpers in an 85-64 win over Boston College on Sunday.

Harvin led the Seminoles (18-3, 4-1 ACC) with a career-high 22 points. Three of them came in a span of 9:29 in the first half when Florida State outscored Boston College (11-9, 2-3) 23-5.

Harvin's role has recently changed, moving to guard after playing so much in the low post. Moving to the wing, she felt very confident with her outside shot.

"I work on that shot before practice and after practice, knowing I'm the three-guard now, knowing I can shoot the ball," she said. "Practicing that shot is going to help the team, and it did."

The Seminoles' early streak turned their 8-7 deficit into a 30-13 lead. Florida State led by as many as 26 on Sunday, and made 11 of 22 3-pointers against the Eagles.

Florida State coach Sue Semrau said Harvin's success has come in part from redshirt freshman Chasity Clayton's emergence as a potent post player.

Clayton notched career highs with 21 points and 11 rebounds and led the team down low as Jacinta Monroe and Cierra Bravard both were in foul trouble.

Semrau appreciates her team's abilities from the 3-point line, but said the Seminoles still have room for improvement in several areas.

Florida State committed 25 turnovers against Boston College and shot just 66.7 percent from the free throw line.

"We are confident enough in enough areas that we can go out and compete with anybody right now," Semrau said. "It's really, though, our goal to improve in a lot of different areas. We can't always rely on 3-point shooting."

Boston College fell short in several categories Sunday. The Eagles lead the ACC in free throw percentage and sit third in 3-point percentage, but shot just 66.7 percent from the line and made just two of their 16 attempts from 3-point range.

"This was a tough atmosphere to play in," Boston College coach Sylvia Crawley said. "It was a very tough game and a very intense game. It was just so physical, we weren't able to make shots tonight."

Courtney Ward scored 13 points and Monroe added 10 for Florida State. Carolyn Swords led Boston College with 19 points.
