No. 6 Gamecocks outlast Bulldogs

Feb 7, 2014 - 4:42 AM Starkville, MS (SportsNetwork.com) - Aleighsa Welch totaled 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead South Carolina to a 71-64 victory over Mississippi State on Thursday.

Khadijah Sessions and Asia Dozier added 14 and 10 points, respectively, for the Gamecocks (21-2, 9-1 SEC), who have won five straight.

Jerica James scored 11 off the bench and Martha Alwal and Savannah Carter added 10 points apiece for the Bulldogs (16-8, 3-7), who have dropped five of their last seven.

The Gamecocks led by 12 with under 12 minutes left to play before the Bulldogs used a 14-3 run to pull within one, 55-54, with 6 1/2 minutes remaining. South Carolina rattled off the next five points and Mississippi State came within three after a James trey.

The Bulldogs only got within four through the final three minutes, though, as the Gamecocks held them off.
