Lady Lions survive Shockers in tourney opener

Mar 23, 2014 - 9:11 PM University Park, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Maggie Lucas scored a game-high 22 points and cleared a career-best nine rebounds as the Penn State Lady Lions defeated the Wichita State Shockers, 62-56, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament's Stanford Regional at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Joining Lucas in double figures for the third-seeded Lady Lions (24-7) were Ariel Edwards and Talia East with 17 and 13 points, respectively, the latter accounting for a game-high 13 rebounds as well.

The 14th-seeded Shockers (26-7) were led by Michaela Dapprich who dropped in 19 points on 5-of-10 shooting beyond the arc, while Alex Harden posted 16 points in the setback.

Wichita State led by as many as 11 points in the first half, but held a 30-25 advantage at the break even after PSU made good on just 1-of-5 at the free- throw line and 2-of-8 behind the 3-point line through the first 20 minutes.

In the second half the Shockers managed to convert a mere eight field goals as they allowed PSU off the hook.

The Lady Lions, who will now face Florida in the second round of the tournament, knocked down only 7-of-15 at the free-throw line and turned the ball over 15 times, but helped themselves with a 46-29 rebounding advantage on the day.
