Wiggins, Appel help Stanford knock off Tennessee

Dec 23, 2007 - 6:50 AM PALO ALTO, California (Ticker) -- Candice Wiggins and Jayne Appel helped Stanford get to overtime, and Rosalyn Gold-Onwude took over from there to knock off the No. 1 team in the country.

Gold-Onwude scored nine of her 13 points in the overtime as No. 4 Stanford knocked off top-ranked Tennessee, 73-69, in overtime on Saturday.

Candace Parker's jumper with seven seconds remaining tied the game at 63-63 and sent the game into overtime where the Stanford sophomore guard took control.

Gold-Onwude scored all but one of Stanford's points in the extra five minutes and her 3-pointer with 52 seconds to play gave the Cardinals a 70-68 advantage. Wiggins made one free throw and Gold-Onwude connected on a pair to help Stanford (10-1) hold on for its seventh straight win.

Wiggins scored 22 points and Appel added 19 and 14 rebounds, but most of which had come during regulation.

Tennessee (10-1) led by as many as 11 in the first half before settling for a 33-27 lead at the half. Appel scored eight points during an 18-8 run after intermission as the Cardinals took their first lead of the game, 45-41, with 11:20 to play.
