Dazzling effort by Wiggins powers Stanford

Mar 25, 2008 - 5:24 AM STANFORD, California (Ticker) -- Candice Wiggins poured in 44 points to power No. 2 seed Stanford to an 88-54 romp over seventh-seeded Texas-El Paso in a second-round game in the Spokane Regional.

Wiggins finished 15-of-27 from the floor, including 6-of-13 3-pointers, to tie a school record and post the third-highest total in NCAA Tournament history.

It was also the biggest outburst by a player since Sheryl Swoopes scored 47 for Texas Tech in the NCAA title game in 1993. Wiggins also had 10 rebounds and eight assists, barely missing a triple-double.

Jayne Appel added 20 points on a perfect 9-of-9 shooting for the Cardinal (32-3), who shot 56 percent (32-of-57) for the game.

Kayla Pedersen had 11 points and 11 rebounds for Stanford, which will face No. 6 Pittsburgh in the "Sweet 16."

Izabela Piekarska had 17 points and eight rebounds for UTEP (28-4), which was outrebounded, 43-30.
