Davis shoots Vandy to victory on late layup
Feb 2, 2007 - 6:49 AM LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Ticker) -- Dee Davis usually devastates opponents with her deft passing but her shooting proved to be Kentucky's downfall on Thursday.Davis scored the game-winning layup with two seconds remaining left as No. 15 Vanderbilt squeaked out a 63-62 victory over the Wildcats in a Southeastern Conference matchup.
Amani Franklin's layup with 11 seconds left gave Kentucky a 62-61 lead. Following a Vanderbilt timeout, Davis - the SEC's leader in assists last season - scored on a layup of her own. The Commodores (19-4, 5-3 SEC) then intercepted the ensuing inbound pass, securing their third straight road victory.
Christina Wirth scored 14 points and Carla Thomas chipped in 11 for Vanderbilt, which extended its winning streak in this series to 11 games.
Despite shooting 38.5 percent (10-of-26) from the field in the first half, the Commodores held a 31-30 lead. They did turn things around after the break by connecting on 12-of-19 (63 percent) attempts.
Jennifer Humphrey had 16 points and nine rebounds, falling one board short of her 17th double-double, for the Wildcats (14-4, 3-5), who lost their third game in a row.
