Rutgers advances to Big East Conference final, upends Marquette

Mar 6, 2007 - 4:32 AM HARTFORD, Connecticut (Ticker) -- Kia Vaughn scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Matee Ajavon added 20 points to lead No. 21 Rutgers to a 63-55 triumph over No. 19 Marquette to advance to the Big East Conference championship.

Rutgers (21-8) squares off against third-ranked Connecticut in the Big East final on Tuesday. It is 0-4 all-time in Big East tournament finals.

After a tightly contested first half, the Scarlet Knights opened the second on a 17-4 run, capped by Ajavon's two free throws with 12:26 remaining for a 48-37 advantage.

The Golden Eagles (25-6) closed to within 55-51 on Kelly Lam's three-point play with 4:36 left, but they did not get any closer.

Epiphanny Prince scored 10 points for Rutgers, which shot 42 percent (20-of-48) and scored 17 points off 12 Marquette turnovers.

Krystal Ellis netted 20 points for the Golden Eagles, who shot 36 percent (20-of-55) from the field.
