No. 5 Maryland slips past No. 25 UNC in OT

Jan 8, 2012 - 8:59 PM Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - Tianna Hawkins hit the go-ahead bucket inside of two minutes left in overtime, while Alyssa Thomas scored 24 points with eight rebounds, and No. 5 Maryland remained unbeaten by topping 25th- ranked North Carolina, 78-72, on Sunday.

Anjale Barrett poured in 16 points and dished out nine assists for the Terrapins (16-0, 3-0 ACC), who are two wins shy of the best start in school history.

Maryland's 2006-07 squad went 18-0.

Chay Shegog's 20 points and eight boards wasn't enough for the Tar Heels (12-3, 2-1 ACC), whose five-game win streak came to an end.

Candace Wood added 15 points and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt scored 13 with five rebounds and four assists in defeat.

Thomas rescued the Terps, as her reverse layup as time expired in regulation knotted the game 67-67, erasing UNC's 66-60 lead with 90 seconds to play.

In the extra session, Hawkins came up with the rebound of a missed free throw and her put-back gave Maryland the lead for good at 73-72.
