Flyers foiled by Florida in first round

Mar 23, 2014 - 10:33 PM University Park, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Cassie Peoples scored 21 points, leading all five starters in double figures, as the Florida Lady Gators defeated the Dayton Flyers, 83-69, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament's Stanford Regional at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Ronni Williams and Jaterra Bonds both added 15 points for the 11th-seeded Lady Gators (20-12), followed by Carlie Needles and Kayla Lewis with 11 points apiece, the latter capturing 11 rebounds as well.

The Flyers (23-8), the sixth seed in the region, were led by Andrea Hoover who dropped in a game-high 22 points, while Celeste Edwards responded with 15 points. Amber Deane and Ally Malott pitched in with 14 and 12 points,. respectively.

Dayton, which converted 51.9 percent from the field in the first half, moved out to a 32-29 advantage at the break even after making just 3-of-11 behind the 3-point line and turning the ball over 13 times.

In the second half it was Florida with 51.4 percent accuracy from the floor and a perfect 13-of-13 at the charity stripe that led the Lady Gators back for the comfortable win.

The Lady Gators now have a Tuesday night meeting set with Penn State, after the Lady Lions dispatched Wichita State earlier on Sunday by a score of 62-56.
