Hawks hang on against Georgia in tourney opener
Mar 24, 2014 - 1:52 AM Storrs, CT (SportsNetwork.com) - Erin Shields tallied a game-high 18 points as the St. Joseph's Hawks took down the Georgia Lady Bulldogs, 67-57, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament's Lincoln Region at Gampel Pavilion.Also scoring in double figures for the ninth-seeded Hawks (23-9) were Natasha Cloud and Ashley Robinson with 13 and 10 points, respectively, the latter also pulling down 10 rebounds to pace the program in that department.
The eighth-seeded Lady Bulldogs (20-12) were guided by Erika Ford who used 4- of-6 shooting behind the 3-point line to come up with 16 points, while Merritt Hempe and Krista Donald contributed 13 and 10 points, respectively. Donald also tied for the game high with 10 rebounds in the losing cause.
The Hawks connected on an even 50 percent from the field in the first half, including 4-of-8 behind the 3-point line in the period, en route to a 38-30 advantage at the break.
In the second half the defense for St. Joseph's limited Georgia to only 10 field goals and 32.3 percent accuracy from the floor, allowing the Hawks to hold on for the victory.
The Hawks will now take on top-ranked UConn in the next round on Tuesday night after the Huskies crushed Prairie View A&M, 87-44.
