Ponder leads South over North in Senior Bowl

Jan 30, 2011 - 1:29 AM Mobile, AL (Sports Network) - Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder, who was named the MVP of the game, threw for 132 yards and two touchdowns, as the South defeated the North, 24-10, in the 62nd Senior Bowl from Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

Ponder connected on 7-of-13 passes, Alabama's Greg McElroy completed 5-of-8 passes for 36 yards and TCU's Andy Dalton connected on 3-of-7 passes for 22 yards for the South.

Miami wide receiver Leonard Hankerson hauled in five passes for 100 yards and a score for the victors. Jeremy Kerley of TCU caught two passes for 29 yards and a touchdown.

The South was led on the ground by Louisville's Bilal Powell, who carried the ball 10 times for 50 yards. Derrick Locke of Kentucky rushed for 37 yards on 11 carries.

Washington quarterback Jake Locker completed 6-of-10 passes for 98 yards for the North. Iowa's Ricky Stanzi connected on 7-of-12 passes for 87 yards. Colin Kaepernick of Nevada completed 4-of-9 passes for 53 yards and an interception.

Maryland's Da'Rel Scott carried the ball five times for 15 yards and a score. The North was outgained on the ground by a 127-0 margin.

This year's North squad was led by the coaching staff of the Cincinnati Bengals, including head man Marvin Lewis. Chan Gailey and his Buffalo Bills staff guided the South.

The South got the ball to start the game and marched right down the field. The first play from scrimmage resulted in a 49-yard pass from Ponder to Hankerson. The South used the ground game to get inside the five-yard line, but had to settle for a 23-yard Josh Jasper field goal.

After the North went three-and-out, the South put together an 11-play, 70-yard drive. Locke rushed for three and 15 yards on consecutive carries to put the ball at the 19 of the North. Ponder and Hankerson hooked up on an 18-yard score a few plays later to make it 10-0 with 2:14 left in the first quarter.

The South made it a 17-0 game in the second stanza. Noel Devine of West Virginia capped a 10-play, 45-yard march with a one-yard TD run with 4:05 left until half.

The North's second possession of the second half resulted in a 24-yard field goal from Kai Forbath.

A touchdown by the North late in the third made things interesting. Scott's 34-yard catch was followed up by a 21-yard defensive pass interference call. The penalty put the ball at one-yard line, and Scott rumbled into the end zone to make it 17-10 with 19 seconds left.

The North had a chance to get within four, but Niles Paul missed a 44-yard field goal early in the fourth.

Following a pair of punts, Ponder and Kerley hooked up on a 23-yard score to put the game away.

The North team had won four of the previous six Senior Bowls, including a 31-13 romp over the South last season...The South outgained the North, 317-238.
