Kansas continues perfect season with win over Oklahoma State
Nov 11, 2007 - 7:34 AM STILLWATER, Oklahoma (Ticker) -- If Todd Reesing wasn't already a Heisman Trophy contender, he should be following Saturday's performance.Reesing threw three touchdown passes to Marcus Henry to lead No. 5 Kansas to its 10th straight win, a 43-28 triumph over Oklahoma State in a matchup of Big 12 Conference foes.
With top-ranked Ohio State losing to Illinois earlier, Kansas (10-0, 6-0 Big 12 North) and Hawaii are the only remaining undefeated teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Hawaii hosts Fresno State later Saturday.
"It was an outstanding performance on the part of our players," Kansas coach Mark Mangino said. "Todd Reesing played well again. Brandon McAnderson continues to play well for us. The offensive line continues to pass-protect and run-block very well."
Kansas is off to its first 10-0 start since 1899.
"It's awesome, it's unbelievable," Reesing said of the team's start to the season. "To be at this point in the season and be undefeated is beyond our wildest dreams"
Reesing, who was coming off a six-touchdown performance a week ago against Nebraska, completed 27-of-40 passes for 313 yards. The sophomore signal-caller now has 26 touchdown passes this season against just four interceptions.
Reesing's day got off to a good start when he found Henry in the back corner of the end zone for a five-yard touchdown to give the Jayhawks a 7-0 edge with 6:35 remaining in the first quarter.
It remained a close contest until Kansas broke the game open early in the third quarter, when Reesing connected with Henry on an 82-yard scoring strike. Reesing fired a post pattern to Henry, who made a pair of defenders miss before racing down the field to extend the lead to 27-14 with 12:33 left.
Henry, who enjoyed the first multi-touchdown game of his career, made eight catches for a career-high 199 yards.
"Marcus Henry, coming back to his home state, had a big night tonight and I am very happy for him," Mangino said. "He is a young man that just wanted an opportunity to play Division I football. We gave it to him and he has made the most of it."
Brandon McAnderson's second touchdown of night - a 12-yard run - gave Kansas a 33-14 advantage midway through the third. McAnderson also plowed into the end zone from four yards out in the first half and finished with 132 yards on 25 carries.
Zac Robinson helped the Cowboys (5-5, 3-3 South) battle back, leading back-to-back scoring drives to close the deficit to 33-28 early in the fourth quarter.
Robinson connected with Tommy Devereaux on a 39-yard touchdown strike and then ran in a three-yard score on the ensuing drive.
Reesing, however, led the Jayhawks right back down the field and capped an 11-play drive with a four-yard touchdown pass to Henry to grab a 40-28 lead with 8:26 to play.
"We were moving the ball well all night and that drive was definitely a huge drive because it got us a little bit more of a lead and a little more of a comfort level," Reesing said.
On Oklahoma State's ensuing drive, Robinson was intercepted by cornerback Aqib Talib, which set up Scott Webb's 23-yard field goal to provide the final margin. Kansas' defense then made a fourth-down stand to seal the win.
"I give Kansas a lot of credit," Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. "They did tonight what they've done all year long: made no mistakes, had very few penalties and took care of the football. They did a nice job on offense of mixing the run and pass."
