Ganaway scores 5 TDs as Baylor outlasts Washington
Dec 30, 2011 - 8:04 AM San Antonio, TX (Sports Network) - Terrance Ganaway ran for five second-half touchdowns, as No. 15 Baylor outlasted Washington, 67-56, in Thursday's back- and-forth Alamo Bowl shootout.Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III threw for a score and ran for another for the Bears (10-3), who recorded their first 10-win season since 1980. Ganaway rushed for 200 yards on 21 carries, while Jarred Salubi and Tevin Reese both added 101 rushing yards.
Keith Price accounted for seven touchdowns in the loss, throwing for 438 yards and four scores and adding three touchdown on the ground. Chris Polk ran for 147 yards and a score on 30 carries for the Huskies (7-6), who dropped four of five to end the season.
"I think we'll have a hard time the rest of the bowl season [seeing] another quarterback play better than Keith played tonight," said Washington coach Steve Sarkisian.
The teams combined for 1,397 total yards and 17 touchdowns -- both FBS bowl records.
In a game devoid of defense, the Bears got a stop when they needed it most.
Price opened the scoring in the fourth with an eight-yard touchdown run, extending the ball to the pylon for a 56-53 lead. Just 1:25 later, Ganaway capped a 67-yard drive with a four-yard TD burst.
Polk converted a 4th-and-1 on Washington's next drive, but Price was incomplete on 4th-and-8 later in the march, as the Huskies stalled at the Baylor 39 with 3:20 remaining. Ganaway reeled off a 43-yard touchdown run three plays later and Danny Shelton fumbled away the ensuing kickoff to seal the final result.
"I'm just glad we won the game," said Griffin. "Our defense stepped up big there at the end when we needed them to."
The Bears had trailed by 18 early in the second half, as Washington took a 35-24 lead into the break and opened the third with Price's 80-yard touchdown pass to Jermaine Kearse.
Baylor answered with a pair of scores. Salubi capped a lengthy march with a seven-yard TD run before Ganaway capitalized on a Washington red zone turnover -- a fumble by Polk -- with an 89-yard TD scamper. The ensuing two-point conversion made it 42-39 midway through the third.
It took two plays for the Huskies to respond, as Devin Aguilar followed Kearse's 60 yard catch with a 13-yard touchdown reception, extending the advantage to 49-39.
The lead would not last, as Ganaway sandwiched a pair of one-yard touchdown plunges around Erik Folk's missed 43-yard field goal for a 53-49 BU advantage at the end of three.
Baylor opened the game in dominating fashion, grabbing a 21-7 lead after one quarter.
Griffin hit Kendall Wright for an 11-yard touchdown to open the scoring before Price tied the game with a five-yard TD run. The Bears' next march ended with Salubi's 36-yard scoring burst. Before the quarter ended, Griffin eluded three defenders in the backfield, and escaped for a 24-yard TD run to extend the BU lead.
But Washington dominated the second quarter, scoring 28 straight points to take control. Price tied the game with a pair of TD passes, finding James Johnson for a 12-yard score on the Huskies opening drive, then hitting Aguilar for a one-yard TD on 3rd-and-goal. A pair of Baylor gaffes followed, allowing UW to take the lead.
Griffin fumbled away the football on BU's next drive courtesy of Andrew Dawson's blindside sack. The Huskies took over near midfield and Price reeled off a 15-yard touchdown run dove six plays later. Then, with 44 seconds left in the half, Griffin's 4th-and-9 pass fell incomplete near midfield. Polk ran for a 56-yard score on the next play.
Baylor's Aaron Jones stopped the run with a 42-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.
