Brown helps Oklahoma to sixth straight win

Nov 18, 2006 - 8:13 PM WACO, Texas (Ticker) - Oklahoma continues to do just fine without Adrian Peterson.

Chris Brown rushed for 169 yards and a touchdown as the 16th-ranked Sooners coasted to a 36-10 victory over Baylor in a Big 12 Conference mismatch.

One of the nation's top running backs and a Heisman Trophy candidate, Peterson was lost for the regular season after suffering a broken collarbone on October 14.

Expected to struggle after Peterson went down, the Sooners (9-2, 6-1 Big 12 South) have reeled off five straight wins without him and six in a row overall to remain in contention for the South title.

"I thought we played well. We executed. That's the pleasing part," Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. "There's a bunch of young guys that are moving the football in a good way." Oklahoma would secure a place in the conference title game with a win next week at home at Oklahoma State coupled with a Texas loss to Texas A&M.

Allen Patrick, who had played well in Peterson's absence, missed this contest with an ankle injury, leaving the workload to Brown, a freshman who rushed for two fourth-quarter touchdowns last week against Texas Tech.

Brown enjoyed a huge game at the expense of the overmatched Bears (4-8, 3-5 South). He carried 24 times and scored on a seven-yard as part of a 23-point third quarter, helping the Sooners extend a 13-3 halftime advantage to 36-3.

"We are young, but we know better than that," said Brown, who did have a fumble returned for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Reggie Smith carried things defensively for the Sooners. He returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and his pick and return deep into Bears territory in the third quarter set up Brown's score.

The Sooners also sacked Blake Szymanski five times. One of the sacks resulted in a safety.

Paul Thompson also threw for two touchdowns for Oklahoma, which improved to 16-0 all-time against Baylor. He completed 12-of-19 passes for 178 yards without an interception.

Braelon Davis returned a fumble 56 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter for the Bears, who completed their season with a four-game losing streak.
