Bailey, Romo lead Cowboys past Redskins in OT
Nov 21, 2011 - 12:19 AM Landover, MD (Sports Network) - Tony Romo threw two fourth quarter touchdowns and Dan Bailey nailed a 39-yard field goal in overtime to give the Dallas Cowboys a 27-24 victory over the Washington Redskins.Romo completed 23-of-37 passes for 292 yards and three scores for Dallas (6-4), which won its third straight game.
DeMarco Murray carried the ball 25 times for 73 yards and Jason Witten paced the Cowboys with 85 receiving yards and a score.
"In the end we just did enough to win this ball game," Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said. "There were a lot of guys who stepped up in different roles in this game and made plays for us."
Rex Grossman threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns, including a game-tying four-yard TD in the final minute of regulation on 25-of-38 passing for Washington (3-7).
Jabar Gaffney caught seven passes for 115 yards and a touchdown in the loss, while Graham Gano made 1-of-3 field goals.
Gano missed a 52-yarder wide right in the extra frame to hand the Redskins their sixth consecutive defeat.
Trailing by seven late in the fourth quarter, Washington took over on offense at its own 11 with 5:35 left in regulation.
Donte' Stallworth hauled in a 20-yard grab on the first play of the drive and a 27-yard reception by Darrel Young moved the ball past midfield.
A Grossman third-down pass at the Dallas 21 fell incomplete, but a defensive holding penalty on Dallas gave Washington a fresh set of downs.
Facing a 3rd-and-goal at the four with time winding down, Grossman hit Stallworth in the back-left corner of the end zone on a fade to send the game into overtime.
"I tried to put it in the back of the end zone where only he could get it and he made a great catch on it," Grossman said about his game-tying throw.
Washington won the toss in the extra frame and got the ball first, driving to the Dallas 34 as the Redskins saw just one third down. But Gano's 52-yard attempt sailed wide to the right.
After Martellus Bennett fought for a 14-yard gain on the first play of Dallas' drive, the Cowboys saw themselves in a 3rd-and-15 situation near midfield. Dez Bryant was able to pull the Cowboys out of it, though, when he beat two defenders and pulled down a 26-yard gain.
Three plays later, Bailey snuck a 39-yard kick just inside the left upright to give Dallas the win.
Dallas was held to a punt on the opening possession of the game, but was given the ball right back three plays later when a Fred Davis fumble was recovered by the Cowboys at the Washington 24.
Romo quickly put Dallas on the board by hitting Bryant for a 22-yard touchdown.
Neither team was able to put together much offense for the remainder of the first quarter as only one of five drives reached into the opposition's territory.
The Cowboys were finally able to put a drive together on their first touch of the second quarter and Bailey's 37-yard field goal made it a 10-0 game.
Washington got on the board three possessions later when Grossman capped a six-play drive with a five-yard sneak in for the score.
Dallas was then held to a punt and Washington went into the break with a 14-10 lead after Gaffney's 16-yard TD grab with 14 seconds left in the half.
Gano split the uprights from 40 yards out on the opening possession of the second half to put Washington up by seven.
But Romo found Laurent Robinson on the left side of the end zone less than a minute into the fourth to tie the game and then gave Dallas a 24-17 advantage after a Washington punt when he spun away from a rush and hit Witten deep down the middle of the field for a 59-yard score.
