Bears win Super Bowl rematch with Colts
Aug 21, 2007 - 3:06 AM INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Super Bowl rematch confirmed two things: The Chicago Bears still have great special teams and Rex Grossman still can't hold onto the ball. The Bears rode their special-teams unit to 17 consecutive points and overcame an interception and three fumbles by Grossman to defeat the Indianapolis Colts, 27-24, on Monday night.
Peyton Manning, who earned MVP honors in leading the Colts to a 29-17 victory over the Bears in the Super Bowl, finished 5-of-8 for 61 yards.
He directed Indianapolis to its first touchdown, a 4-yard run by Joseph Addai on the first play of the second quarter for a 7-0 lead.
But the Colts failed to cash in on an early interception by Grossman, getting stopped on two cracks at the 1-yard line - a run by Addai and an incomplete pass by Manning.
The much-maligned Grossman continued his penchant for coughing up the ball, losing a fumble on the Bears' first possession, throwing an interception on the second and recovering his own fumble on two other occasions.
The Bears bailed him out when Danieal Manning ran a kickoff back 72 yards to set up Robbie Gould's 32-yard field goal.
Minutes later, punt returner extraordinaire Devin Hester brought one back 50 yards to set up Grossman's 1-yard scoring run that gave the Bears a 10-7 lead midway through the second quarter.
The Bears forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and backup quarterback Brian Griese cashed in with a 9-yard TD pass to Bernard Berrian.
Grossman was 9-of-11 for 59 yards while Griese went 10-of-13 for 131 yards.
Colts backup QB Jim Sorgi led two second-quarter scoring drives, including a 9-yard TD pass to Aaron Moorehead, to forge a 17-17 tie at halftime.
Sorgi finished 11-of-18 for 107 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
