Mare's five FGs help Seahawks down lowly Cardinals

Nov 15, 2010 - 2:50 AM Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Olindo Mare matched his own franchise record with five field goals, and Matt Hasselbeck threw for 333 yards, as Seattle claimed a 36-18 victory over Arizona in an NFC West showdown at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Hasselbeck completed 22-of-34 throws, with 11 of them going to Mike Williams for 145 yards, as the Seahawks (5-4) ended a two-game slide during which they were outscored 74-10. Williams matched a career-high with his 11 grabs, set against Arizona on October 24, and the 145 yards established a career- best.

Marshawn Lynch and Justin Forsett each ran for a score while Deon Butler caught a touchdown pass among his four grabs as Seattle moved into sole possession of first place in the division after San Francisco's overtime win over St. Louis.

"I really enjoyed this day," Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said after the win. "I watched our team hang tough and answer the call starting the second half. It really feels good in terms of momentum and starting up again and in that so many phases of the game, we did some good things today."

Derek Anderson connected on 23-of-45 throws for 322 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Cardinals (3-6), who lost both meetings with Seattle in a span of four games.

"It's obviously very frustrating," said Anderson. "We have to continue to keep working. We need to stay strong in the room, play for each other and keep fighting for each other and not let anything from the outside get in and pull us apart."

Tim Hightower carried 13 times for 39 yards and a score while Early Doucet made six catches for 71 yards and a touchdown for the hosts, who have lost their last two home games and four straight overall. It's the longest losing streak for Arizona since they dropped eight in a row in 2006.

The Cardinals struck first just 2:12 into the game on a two-run scoring run by Hightower that finished off a five-play, 52-yard drive.

Seattle responded with a 12-play, 77-yard march that Lynch completed with a one-yard TD run with 7:44 to go in the opening stanza.

A 44-yard catch-and-run by Chris Baker was the key play in an eight-play, 67- yard drive that ended in Olindo Mare's 41-yard field goal that gave the visitors a 10-7 lead 1:37 into the second period.

Arizona answered with a 23-yard Jay Feely field goal to tie the game. The eight-play, 72-yard march was highlighted by completions of 21 and 36 yards to Breaston on back-to-back plays.

The visitors needed only 43 seconds to strike again on its next touch with a 63-yard catch and run for a score by Butler that put them back on top, 17-10, with 7:28 to go before halftime.

The wide receiver caught a deep crossing pattern outside the Arizona 20 and appeared to be hemmed in by three defenders near the left sideline at the 10, but was able to spin and then cut to his right to dash to the end zone.

Seattle drove deep into Arizona territory on its next possession, but Hasselbeck was stuffed on a keeper on 4th-and-1 with 62 seconds left before the intermission.

Hasselbeck sustained an injury to his left hand on the play that kept him off the field for the first two Seattle drives in the second half.

On their second possession of the third quarter, Seattle had apparently committed a second straight turnover on a Williams fumble. However, after a challenge by head coach Pete Carroll and subsequent review, the play was overturned and ruled an incomplete pass.

The Seahawks moved an additional 19 yards from there until the drive stalled at the 16. Mare came on to boot a 34-yarder to push the lead to 10 with just over seven minutes to play in the period.

Seattle turned a Kelly Jennings interception and a Chris Clemons fumble recovery into a pair of Mare field goals that extended the lead to 26-10 with 1:15 remaining in the period.

Leon Washington's 48-yard punt return set the Seahawks up at the Arizona 11, but Lynch was stopped on 3rd-and-goal from the one to set up Mare's 19-yard field goal that made it a 29-10 contest with 12:18 to go in the game.

A two-yard touchdown pass to Doucet and subsequent two-point conversion pass to Larry Fitzgerald trimmed the lead to 29-18 with just under eight minutes left to play.

After Mare hit the left upright on a 29-yard field goal try, Clemons sacked Anderson on fourth down at the Arizona 10, setting up the Seahawks in great field position.

Forsett banged in from four yards out to make it a 36-18 game with 3:49 to play.
